The 5 MAIN things you need for a milsim operation is:
1.WATER! You never want to get dehydrated while playing.
2.EXTRA MAGS! You never want to run out of ammo mid-game, and have to run back to your car for more. That kinda takes away the whole point of MILSIM.
3. MAP OF THE FIELD AND FIELD RULES! You want to know where you’re going, and how the game works.
4. BACK UP PRIMARY WEAPON. I’ve seen way too many people having to leave the game early because something was wrong with their gun internally.
5. EYE PROTECTION AND BACK UP EYE PROTECTION! It may seem silly, but I’ve actually seen some people run, have their safety glasses fall, and can’t find them. I’ve also seen some people’s eye protection break on the field.
Gear wise, you should have:
-Radio(if you have a team)
-The uniform requirments
-A pocket knife/Letherman tool/Multitool(Not for stabbing people, to cut stuff.)
-1-2 pens
-Admin pouch(To hold maps, patches, ect.)
-Glow sticks! If the operation lasts all day and gets dark, you can’t really identify a group of people that could be enemies or friendlies. So what do you do? Throw a glow stick under their feet to get a quick look at their arm bands/uniform!
Well, your best bet would be a decent set of load bearing equipment or MOLLE gear. The reason being is that, if you are going to do Milsim, you are going to be bringing most of what you need with on the field and be out there for hours on end. So you’ll need to find a set up that will allow you to comfortably carry the gear you know you will need (water, magazines, etc.) and what you think you will may or may not need (first aid, batteries, etc.).
Example: an LBT 6094 Plate Carrier, with an MAP backpack to carry extra stuff if needed, 4 – 5 close top m4 pouches, EMT Pouch for first aid kit or misc gear, radio pouch + radio and comms, and so on.
Another key thing about Milsim is the uniform. You will most likely need either a Green type (MARPAT woodland, Old School Woodland, Woodland DPM, Flecktarn, etc) uniform or a Tan type (MARPAT Desert, 6 color desert, 3 color desert, Desert DPM, etc). They usually split teams up based upon uniforms.
Pretty much, it is entirely based upon your personal preference, team requirements, and event/game requirements. But overall you really just need a uniform of some sort that complies with event/team standards, a decent rig that allows you to carry the max amount of stuff but with manageable weight distribution, and a few extra odds and ends like secondary weapons and back primaries and so on.
